Ashing, fusion and high-temperature sintering share one requirement: a vessel that survives the furnace without contaminating the sample. High-purity fused quartz crucibles meet that requirement where porcelain and borosilicate cannot, and they remain the standard choice for analytical ashing and many fusion procedures.
Why quartz crucibles
Fused quartz combines three properties that matter at temperature. Purity: at 99.99% SiO2, the crucible contributes almost no metal contamination — essential when the ash goes on to trace analysis. Thermal shock resistance: quartz crucibles tolerate the rapid heating and cooling cycles of muffle furnace work far better than porcelain. Temperature capability: continuous use at 1050–1100°C, with short excursions higher, covers nearly all ashing and many fusion procedures.
