CNC Machining of Quartz Glass
Once quartz parts need holes, slots, grooves or complex outlines, they move from the flame to the machine shop. Quartz is machined with diamond tooling and generous coolant, because the material is hard and brittle: the process removes material by micro-fracture, and the machinist's job is to control that fracture so the part stays intact and dimensionally accurate.
What CNC Machining Can Do on Quartz
- Drilling — through and blind holes, single or multi-hole patterns
- Slotting — wafer boat slots, groove arrays, flow channels
- Milling and profiling — 2D and 2.5D contours, pockets, steps
- Threading — external and internal threads on heavy-wall parts [size range To Be Added]
- Grinding — OD/ID sizing, flatness and parallelism control
Design for Manufacturability
Quartz forgives neither sharp internal corners nor hard tool pressure. A few design rules make parts cheaper and stronger:
- Use generous corner radii instead of sharp internal corners
- Keep wall thickness reasonable around holes and slots
- Place holes away from edges where possible
- Specify tight tolerances only where the process needs them
Send us your drawing and we will return DFM feedback with the quotation — small geometry changes at the design stage often save significant cost.
Tolerances
Achievable tolerance depends on part size, geometry and surface area machined. General commercial tolerances are wide; ground and lapped features can reach much tighter values. Specific capability figures for our equipment will be published after confirmation. [Tolerance Capability Table To Be Added]
